Dawkes Wins Topper Open
Bec Dawkes won the Purple Marine sponsored Sutton SC Topper Open Meeting on Saturday 18 August.
With a great entry of 24 boats (11 local and 13 visiting) the race team were put to test with a Southerly breeze of force 0 to 3 at various times during the 3 races.
Race 1 started in a steady force 2 and was lead at the Windward mark by Mathew Venables, he was however passed down the run by Bec Dawkes, Seonaid Flemming and Sam Knight. Bec Dawkes of Tamworth Sailing Club took the lead in which she held to the finish. 2nd place was held by Seonaid Flemming of South Staffs, meanwhile a local battle ensued between Sam Knight and Mathew Venables, the later claiming 3rd place.
Race 2 and 3 were sailed back to back after lunch. Sam Knight lead this race, however he was hotly pursued by Bec Dawkes, Sam managed to hold his lead to the finish with Bec Dawkes taking a well earned 2nd place. Ben Eaves of Redditch S.C sailed a great race and finished 3rd. A battle for 4th place was between 6 boats on the last beat, Mark Flemming of South Staffs rounded the last mark in 4th closely followed by Matthew Venables, Megan O’Brien, Seonaid Flemming, Joshua Crosby of Manor Park and Dan Venables. Dan tacked straight round the mark into clear air, whilst the rest of fleet covered each other. It was Mark Flemming who held onto 4th place, followed by his sister Seonaid in 5th and Dan Venables in 6th place.
Race 3 was started in wet and breezy conditions with a slight change of course. There were 3 potential boats capable of winning overall and the fleet were eager to start and forced a General Recall. With the Black Flag in operation only one was disqualified, James Hill of Sutton S.C. The race was lead initially by Matt Duffied of Chelmarsh S.C., with the overall title up for grabs the top 3 boats climbed through the fleet with a battle ensuing for lead between Sam Knight and Seonaid Flemming. On the final beat Seonaid who was leading ended in a tacking dual with Sam Knight, this allowed Bec Dawkes to close the gap. Seonaid held her lead to the finish with Sam Knight in 2nd and Bec Dawkes in 3rd and with that result just enough to win on discard.
Prizes were donated by Purple Marine to the winners:
1st Overall Bec Dawkes Tamworth S.C
2nd Overall Sam Knight Sutton S.C.
3rd Overall Seonaid Flemming South Staffs S.C.

Sail The World

To All Clubmembers,
please see the above poster which gives details of an extra event we are promoting on the 1st of September.
As our part of the international celebration of the centenary of ISAF (The International Sailing Federation) the idea is to get as many people on the water as possible over the weekend.
We decided to run a pursuit race and the RLNI pennant on this day and to have some other fun races/games and combine this with a BBQ social in the early evening.
Please add names to the list on the notice board.
A certificate will be awarded to all participants.

OOD Duty - for all
Hello to all sailing (occasional or otherwise) members of the club - your club needs you! As a club dedicated to the enjoyment of sailing and especially racing we have a little problem. The racing can only take place when we have sufficient volunteers to run the race and operate the safety boats - ie the duty team.
'Duties' are done on a rota basis but the committee is concerned that not all OOD duties are been carried out and as a result racing on the tabled dates could be cancelled if no team are present. (If you are new to the club or don't often come down you may not realise that all sailing members of the club are placed in a team of 3 people who arrange the racing, safety cover and refreshments.)
We guess members may not be able to / want to do duty for various reasons eg fear of not knowing what to do, a clash with some other event, not able to find someone to swap a duty with - other reasons? - let us know
To help overcome these problems please be aware of the following help that is on offer
The Duty Rota - is in the yearbook and on the committee notice board in the club house
If you need a swap - use the swap request sheet on the committee notice board if you can't find anyone to swap with (this has only recently been put up)
If you need some powerboat training - talk to the newly qualified instructors Alan Coleman, Farren Goding, Dave Hall or Chris Davis who will provide a basic level introduction (or proper course if numbers allow).
If you are worried about the race procedures - talk to others in duty teams, consult the comprehensive guide behind the bar or on the website, talk to Alan Turner - we are all here to help each other in this. We are also hoping to have a couple of Wednesday night training sessions in the clubhouse (provisionally 26/9/07 and 10/10/07) to help dispell the worries!
On a positive note, doing a duty is not all work work work - its an excellent way to get involved, to meet a wider number of the members and make a positive contribution which will always be appreciated by those who are racing.
Matthew Daniels - on behalf of the committee
