Dinghy Instructor Courses

There was an anonymous comment on the previous post about courses asking about the fee and accommodation.

The fee is £200 (relatively cheap).
Accommodation is not provided but it is only about 25 miles away.

Dinghy Instructor Courses

It has been mentioned on several occasions recently that we need to increase the number of Dinghy Instructors within the club. This is beneficial both to the club and to anyone who takes a course on Dinghy Instruction as the amount learned is enormous, at least it was for me.

As a consequence I have been exploring the possibility of arranging suitable courses and hopefully we will be able to set up one soon. However, in the meantime, this is an email that I have received from Freddie Thirsk, who is involved in Regional Coaching:

Hi John,

As you see from the attachment Elaine Smith is running a DI course at Staunton Harold SC from 16th to 22nd July. As the course is run during the week, the students will be predominantly teenagers, with a few adults who can find the time.

While we hope to organise a course for you, in the not too distant future, you may find it very useful to get “something in the bank”.

If you have anyone suitable, please get them to submit their application ASAP

Yours aye

Freddie

Rogues Gallery Page 2

Rogues Gallery Page 1

At the last committee meeting of the Sailing Club it was pointed out that the club membership is both changing and increasing and that it is very difficult to follow our policy of trying to be a very friendly and open club when it is almost impossible to know the names of everyone. It was suggested that we should have a Rogues Gallery in which a photo of every adult member of the club is displayed.

Faz kindly offered to have a first attempt at this but it soon became apparent that, if we had reasonable sized photos of everyone, we would have a large number of pages which would be impracticable to display in the clubhouse on the wall. As an alternative we have decided to build up the Gallery on the Blog initially to see how it works out and then transfer the photos to a more semi permanent position on the website and maybe put all the pages in a book in the club later on.

So the first page is given below and the test is:

Do you know your fellow club members? Can you name each one and do you know who is married to who?

PS for those whose picture is on the page - if you don't like your photo, please send us a better one (if you can).

If you have any other CONSTRUCTIVE comments they would be most welcome

Benches

As you know the auction raised in excess of £1000!
We have brought a bench and it has been delivered to the club.
Only one has been brought because we want to know the general opinion of them. If the response is good, we will buy more, if bad we will try a different place.
So have a look and let me know what you think.

Patio surface

We are trying to improve the presentation and facilities generally at the club and it was thought a good ideal to improve the surface of the patio area especially as we shall shortly be having new furniture there. Artificial grass or a tennis court carpet surface have been considered, but discounted because our feathered friends might find it too attractive. Paving or decking would remain an option but as a first attempt we are going to apply a non-slip paint. The choice of colours is as shown. Feel free to comment on your preferences though it will probably come down to a choice between green (safe) and blue (funky), but I could be wrong...

Alan's 80th Birthday

Alan was a bit shy about attending his Birthday Celebration at the club but he was eventually persuaded to make an appearance where I hope he felt the warm feelings of his fellow club members.

Barbara Scase had prepared a very attractive birthday cake for him, as shown in the photo (click to enlarge). Note the fine cars as well as the two boats, though they appear to be on a collision course!

Petra had gone to some trouble to find a huge Dicky Bow with which to make a special birthday card and the photo shows Alan looking at the card with his old friend Don Brown, who is a long serving member of the club. Mike looks on with interest.

At one time we thought that Alan would decide not to come to the club so we took this photo of everyone with the intention of sending it to Alan to show him that we do care for him.

Alls well that ends well and the photo shows Alan cutting the birthday cake with the card behind it. We also presented Alan with a Fleece and a Tee Shirt which had the Sailing Club name embroidered in them. These were obtained by Dave, who had to exert a bit of 'pressure' on the supplier to make sure they arrived on time. Maybe Alan will occasionally wear them instead of his decrepit boiler suit, along with his new Dicky Bow!!
