CENTRE MAIN TACKING

Following recent discussions at the club about tacking and gybing when using a centre main, I found the following article in the latest RYA Wavelength magasine quite interesting

America's Cup Fever.

Here's some pics I took whilst working for Oracle this week in Valencia, despite working for the main sponsor that's as close as we could get with a camera. The port end of the town has been totaly redeveloped to host the event, the rest of the town looks like Beiruit, each team has a base like the one in the picture and they all perform mad docking out ceromonies on race days.

The port which is open to the public has armed guards and security check points, but once inside is buzzing, there is a huge video wall showing the raceing and loads of things to have a go on.

Any one planning on driving down to watch the event here's some stats: its 2500 miles rtn trip, I used 9 tanks of fuel (540 ltrs) drove for 40 hours and spent over £350 on toll roads. The only down side to the trip "France".

Topper Expertise Required

We have arranged a long-term loan of a Topper for James from some friends. It has been stored indoors for a good number of years (their daughter who sailed it last is in her mid-30s!).

Apparently it has been resealed and according to the owner the hull should be sound and as it has been stored in a dry garage I would imagine the sail, rudder, mast and rig will be OK - possibly a bit faded all round.

I am collecting it on Tuesday evening and will bring it down to the club next Sunday morning if possible. Would appreciate someone giving it the once over and advising on what bits are "musts" for repair/replacement. I don't want to do a complete modification of the boat (centre main or flash blocks etc) just get it fit for James to learn in.

Many thanks

Richard P.

OOD Rota

Neither Hilary nor myself are able to do Wednesday evenings because of work commitments, so can anybody help with Wed 25 April and 27 June. We will also be unavailable on 26th August, so any offers of help would be welcome. We have been unable to get to the club for sometime, so it is difficult to discuss OOD swops in the club house, "person to person".
With a bit of luck in a couple of week's time we will be able to get back on the water.

CLUB SAILING DIARY

This just to let you all know that the club website has now been updated with the latest sailing program.

Just copying Alan's program over to the website made me realise (again) just what a huge effort Alan Turner must make every year producing the program in the first place - with a typwriter and tip-ex! This was made even worse this year by the introduction of Sunday morning sailing just as Alan had completed the program.

Thanks Alan.

On the 'CLUB SAILING PROGRAMME on the website you will also see links to the OOD teams and links to a section called 'HELP FOR THE OOD'. This is just a reminder of the flag sequences and gives details of the various types of race.

(If you see any mistakes please let me know)

SUMMER RACING CHANGE OF START TIMES.

There seemed to be a break down in communication over the start times for the summer series raceing which has not been communicated to all members.
The communication is as follows:

As from this Sunday 1st April there will now be three races held on a Sunday with the first race starting at 11am, the second race starts at 13.30 and the third race starts at 15.00 as proposed and voted for at the AGM.

In addition Wednesday evening racing starts from this coming Wednesday 4th April. I believe the time for this to be 18.25 as per previous years.

In the absents of the new books being distributed a analogue copy of the duty rota is posted on the analogue notice board in the club house so please check your bridge teams and dates.
If you are unable to attend your duty please make arrangements for cover.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Thanks
