OLD CLUB PHOTOS

Paul Brown gave me some old photos of the club which I have now scanned and added to the club picture gallery.

You can view the gallery by clicking on the gallery link on the website or on this blog (see the link on the RHS) and logging in with the user name of suttonsc and the password bigpond06

Then click on the Photos tab and you will see a lot of folders of photos that have been uploaded by various club members. If you have any then please add them.

Then tick the box on the Club History folder then click Slide Show and, with a bit of luck, you will see a slide show of the old photos.

Some of them were 3 to a page and I have included the pages with text as well as the individual images.

If any of you can add captions to any of the photos to give a bit more information for the rest of us then please do.

Topper Training

Today was a Midlands Topper Training at Sutton.
It was really windy so I just want to say a big well done to all the sutton toppers who went out and tried, even though it was really hard work.

Also well done to Aimee for helping on the rescue boat!

Congratulations To Skippers Alan & Bev Brown

After a grueling 12 hour day/night under exam conditions Bev & Alan passed and obtained there yatch masters tickets.
Having already canceled the exam twice this year due to storm conditions Wednesday gave us force 5-6 winds most of the day which made manouvers very intersting in the Solant and to top it all the echo sounder died comeing out of the Hamble at low water under the darkness of night. To add even more presure at the start of the week when training we were fog bound for most of the Monday which put there blind navigation skills to practise and we had no wind for most of Monday/Tuesday.

I am sure you will all join me in wishing them every happiness and success with there future plans of actually living the dream.
They are both a shinning example of what change and progress is all about.

Congratulations to them both as they have so earned it.

JUST A NOTE

To all, now we are in our winter series of sailing there are a few extra club rules that need to be followed. You are required to wear either a wet suit or a dry suit - a lot of our younger members look up to the more experienced members as role models, how can we expect them to follow these simple rules if we cannot. Earlier this year the club disposed of a lot of life jackets and boyancy aids as they did not have the C E mark inside them, they were deemed unsafe for use, so I am puzzled why some members still use their own, that are not CE marked.
These rules and guidelines are put in place for a reason, usually for safety - YOURS. Maybe our younger members could look out for any of these issues , let me know and I will gladly point out the error of their ways. Its worth reading up on Hyperthermia signs and symptoms and most of all what to do in cases of extreme conditions. You may be on rescue duty and have to make unpopular decisions for others. If you want info etc please feel free to ask.
Go and enjoy the series - safely and have fun. See you all there. Dave Hall.

Implications of the results of the Quiz Night

Thanks Dave for your comments about the Quiz Night. I enjoyed it as well.

However, we made £25 on the night from 'wrong answers'. At 10p each wrong answer, this means that there were 250 questions about sailing rules for which our club members got the wrong answer, and they were the 'easy questions'! Does this mean that it is not safe to go sailing at our club?

Hopefully you will all come to the next Quiz Night when we will have question classed as 'moderate'. The club should make a small fortune on that night!

Quiz Night

The Quiz Night organised and facilitated by the Commodore John Wilber, was a great success. It was very well attended and after the consumption of a fine choice of alcoholic beverages, what would appear to be the most obvious scenarios that you could think of suddenly had lots of different connotations, examples were projected on to a screen with computerised moving simulations . Thanks to all who attended and supported the club, especially the younger members considering that they had school the next day. Obviously those who did not come, not only missed a great night perhaps they are the ones who would have benefitted the most from the evening. Thanks John.
