RYA WEST MIDLANDS WEBSITE

Dear All,

Apologies for the group email. However, I wanted to let you know about the new RYA West Midlands website. Stuart Scrimgeour has kindly reworked the entire site so it is now more user friendly, has new content and looks fantastic!

This site is now an excellent resource for local and national information on the following -

Resources for Instructors
Club Development
Resources for Principals
Dinghy Hire – regional fleets
OnBoard
T15
Volvo Champion Clubs
Freelance Instructors
Instructor Courses

We would love to hear any feedback and suggestions you may have for additions to the site.
Check it out at http://www.ryawm.co.uk/

Power Boat Incident

Dear All

RYA training centres are often approached to provide training onboard an owner’s vessel.

On the second day of a recent Powerboat Level Two course an instructor and owner were both thrown from a RIB when the centre console and helm position became detached from the deck. This happened during a gentle turn to starboard at approximately 20 – 25 knots.

Fortunately, neither the owner nor the instructor were injured.

Upon further inspection it was discovered that the console had only four short self tapping screws securing it to the deck. The boat was brand new and displayed an RCD mark.

This incident highlights that it is not always prudent to put ones faith totally in CE markings as a guarantee of satisfactory manufacture and assembly.

Full details of the incident and the ensuing MAIB investigation will be in the next edition of Wavelength.

Rya Safety Boat Course 23rd/24th May 2008

I am planning on running an RYA Safety Boat Course on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th May.

Numbers are limited to the amount of PB instructors available. At present I can take 3 students but if any of the other PBI's are free that number can increase as we are only allowed to teach 3:1.

I also need one volunteer on day one and two volunteers on day two to sail various club boats and create various scenarios.

Its a full two day course and you need to be prepared to get wet as some of the syllabus involves entering the water.

You are required to hold an RYA Level 2 power boat certificate in order to do this course.

Course price is £35 to book a place please contact faz@fazaudio.com tel: 07831 434675.

Thanks

Faz

Assistant Instructor Training

We are planning to run a two day Assistant Dinghy Instructor Course in June/July (dates to be confirmed). The aim of this course is to train Assistant Instructors to be able to assist qualified Instructors to teach beginners up to the standard of the National Sailing Certificate, Level 2 Basic Skills, and the Youth Sailing Scheme. This is a very good way to learn a lot about sailing - the best way to learn is to teach! It is also good fun.

Applications from our Junior members are particularly encouraged, but other members of the club are very welcome too.

Interested?
